ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought this fast-moving world, Nigeria and Nasarawa State to a standstill. The impact of this pandemic is massive as its imposed lockdown resulted in the closure of institutions and business activities, public places, fitness and activity centres as well as overall social life. It has also hampered many aspects of the lives of people including routine fitness activities of fitness freaks, which has resulted in various psychological issues and serious fitness and health challenges. This paper focused on the unique experiences of fitness freaks during the period of lockdown due to COVID-19. The paper also explored ways in which alternate exercises and fitness activities at home would help to deal with psychological issues and physical health consequences. To achieve this, a structured questionnaire was developed and conducted on 20 gymnasts who were regularly working out in the gymnasium before the COVID-19 pandemic but stayed at home during the nationwide lockdown. The findings of this study revealed that the participants had a negative situational perception, lack of motivation for fitness exercise, psychological health concerns and overdependence on social media in spending their free time. The researchers recommended regular physical fitness workout at home during the lockdown to curb any psychological issues and fitness challenges.

ABSTRACT

Solid waste mostly garbage, agriculture and industrial waste are disposed in landfills where it decomposes and produces a leachate that can contaminate underlying groundwater. Waste management has remained an undisputable environmental problem in Nigeria. This has manifested in the form of indiscriminate disposal of wastes and illegal landfills and dumps along main roads and streets, and the problem is compounded by the generation of enormous quantities of waste. In the developing world such as Nigeria, borehole water users hardly treat water before usage and this poses a serious threat to their health since they utilized this untreated water for consumption, domestic uses, agriculture and industrial purposes. Some groundwater studies have ascertained that leachates from landfill migrate in the direction of groundwater flow to contaminate the underlying aquifer. The study assessed the vulnerability of boreholes located close to a Municipal dumpsite in Ariaria, Aba. Borehole water samples were collected from eight (8) designated boreholes and their physicochemical parameters were analysed. The length, breadth and depth of the dumpsite were measured with a tape and meter rule. The length of the landfill was 560m, the width 330m and the depth 110m. Geographical positioning system (GPS) was used to obtain the static water level from where the groundwater flow map was deduced. Parameters such as BOD, DO, Fe2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, faecal and total coliform count values when compared with World Health Organization standard (WHO) were seen to exceed the recommended values. The research revealed that groundwater flow from the North to South, carrying along with it dissolved waste materials and leachates which infiltrates into the borehole water and contaminates it, thereby rendering it unsuitable for drinking and domestic use. The researchers therefore suggested that the base of landfills should be properly coated with concrete or cellophane materials to avoid leachates infiltrating into the groundwater. Recycling of municipal waste, proper education and awareness on solid waste management should be encouraged in the study area.

Abstract

This paper seeks to discuss the influence of teachers’ workload on the effective delivery in teaching content in Mogadishu secondary schools, Somalia. The amount of time teachers have to prepare lessons is identified as a key obstacle to teaching efficiency in the study. In this paper, “workload” refers to all of a teacher’s obligations. Role overload occurs when employees believe they are being asked to accomplish more than they have time or resources to complete. The paper identifies many factors that contribute to teachers’ excessive workloads, including the volume of paperwork they deal with, the length of time it takes to complete records forms, and teachers’ participation in extracurricular activities. The influence of teachers’ workloads on their ability to teach was also emphasized. First, it was suggested that teachers should have a suitable environment to work where they may discover things that excite them on their own, they should be protected from the impacts of inappropriate work expectations in order to perform successfully while minimizing burnout and employee turnover, and should be made more aware of dangerous working situations. Teachers should be compensated for heavy workloads in order to motivate them to work more and stay at the school longer.

Abstract

Teachers must be properly motivated in order to reach the needed educational production if quality education is to be achieved. This implies that quality education cannot be attained unless teachers are satisfied with their working conditions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of management motivational strategies on teachers’ job satisfaction in Somalia. The concept of motivation was described as a set of intricate impulses, wants, tensions, emotions, or mechanisms that initiate and sustain action in the direction of achieving one’s own objectives. Some of the basic motivational strategies listed in this paper include staff development and training, participatory decision-making, good working conditions, remunerations and salaries, job security, etc. To increase employee productivity, companies must be able to offer them conditions that will make them more productive and engaged at work. This is what is meant by job satisfaction. The paper recommended among other things, that the terms of employment for school instructors should be more appealing. Teachers should be paid fairly and given advancements when they are due. Loans, housing, and other advantages should be made available to them. For the teacher, this would be encouraging.

Abstract

This study examined selected deposit money banks in Bayelsa State and how idealistic influence and organizational innovation interacted. The study used a cross-sectional research design. Out of the sixty-six (66) distributed questionnaires, sixty-two (62) copies were retrieved and examined during the field survey. The statistical tool Spearman’s rank order correlation coefficient was used to determine the link between the variables. The measures of organizational innovativeness (process and product innovations) and the predictor variable idealistic influence were shown to be strongly positively correlated. It was determined that the innovativeness of deposit money institutions in Bayelsa State considerably positively correlates with idealized influence. The study recommended that deposit money banks increase their capacity for innovation by hiring leaders with the ability to motivate, inspire, and develop followers with exceptional leadership skills that will produce improved results, as well as help followers align their own goals with those of the banks.

ABSTRACT: Geophysical investigation to assess the integrity and extent of damage was carried out at an existing dam site in North central Nigeria using the electrical resistivity method to determine the nature of the subsurface along the dam axis and identify general geologic conditions related to the selection of the dam site. Vertical electrical sounding (VES) measurements were taken along 8 stations at 50m interval across the dam axis, with maximum current electrode separation, (AB/2) of 40m, measured parallel to the geologic strike at each point. Results obtained from the qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the apparent resistivity values showed a 3-layered geo-electric structure namely the topsoil with high resistivity (> 300 ohm-m), weathered basement and the bedrock with low resistivity (< 100 ohm-m). There is a general decrease of resistivity with depth across the 8 stations. The geo-electric section in an E-W direction across the dam axis showed a zone of extensive weathering and erosion characterized by low resistivity values (17ohm-m to 42 ohm-m), at depths of 15-20m between VES 4 and VES 5 across the dam axis. It is recommended that to prevent seepages and differential settlement along the dam axis and nearby structures, filling of the dam beds with competent earth materials to block possible seepage pathways for water should be done in order to prolong the life span of the dam usage amongst other remediation measures.

Abstract

The study was carried out to produce briquettes from sawdust and waste paper and analyze the combustion characteristics of the briquettes mixture. The briquettes were produced using a manual briquetting machine using three sawdust and waste paper mixing ratio of 50:50, 80:20, and 20:80. Combustion reaction investigated were burning time, ignition time, moisture content, density, volatile matter, fixed carbon, ash content, and calorific values. The percentage free carbon of the briquettes ranged from 18- 25%, the calorific value ranged from 3418-3689cal/g. The results attained shows that sawdust and waste paper mixture has good combustion characteristics which qualify them as alternative to firewood for industrial and commercial energy.
