Abstract

The study investigated the managerial competencies of principals as predictors of teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Anambra State. Three research questions guided the study and three null hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance. Correlational research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 263 principals of public secondary schools in Ananbra State. All the 263 principals were used for the study due to relatively manageable size of the population. Two sets of instruments titled ‘‘Principals Managerial Competencies Questionnaire (PMCQ)’’, and ‘‘Teachers’ Job Performance Questionnaire (TJPQ)’’ were used for data collection. The instruments were subjected to face validation by three experts made up of two specialists in Educational Management and a specialist in Measurement and Evaluation all from Department of Educational Foundations in the Faculty of Education, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam campus. Cronbach alpha was used to determine the reliability of the instruments which yielded overall coefficient values of 0.80 and 0.78 for PMCQ and TJPQ respectively. The researcher together with five research assistants, who are secondary school teachers in the area of study, administered copies of the questionnaires directly to the respondents and a 98 percent return rate of the instruments administered was recorded. Data analysis was done using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to answer the research questions 1-2, simple regression to test the hypotheses 1-2 and multiple regression to answer research question 3 and hypothesis 3. The findings of the study revealed among others that communication competency of principals is a strong predictor of teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Anambra State. It was also found that supervision competency of principals is a significant predictor of teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Anambra State. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that Post Primary School Service Commission provide opportunity for principals to attend professional development programmes at least once every academic session for them to up-date their managerial competencies for enhancing the job performance of teachers.

ABSTRACT

Geophysical investigation of the soil was embarked upon in this research, to evaluate the effects of power transformer oil spill on the immediate environment. The impact of electrical transformer oil on the soil’s heavy metals content (lead “Pb”, Cadmium “Cd” and zinc “Cd), geotechnical properties (Atterberg limits) and electrical resistivity, were determined using standard procedures. Findings obtained from the laboratory tests signified that the oil significantly increased the soil’s Pb, Zn, Cd content, and the soil’s electrical resistivity. Remarkably, the soil liquid limit “LL”, plasticity index “PI” and plastic limit “PL”, declined in an uneven pattern with an increase in oil pollution rate. In the soil specimens sampled from the vicinities of the transformers, the Cd content ranged from 0.23 – 1.42 mg/kg, Pb content ranged from 21 – 35 mg/kg, and Zn concentration ranged from 17 – 36 mg/kg. It was also observed from the contaminated soil samples that LL values varied from 40.51 – 53.63%, PL values ranged from 19.88 – 23.88%, and the PI values varied between 19.7 and 32.32%; while the control site’s soil had LL, PL and PI values of 59.23%, 25.27% and 28.96% respectively. Regarding soil electrical resistivity, the transformer oil impacted soil samples developed resistivity that varied from 374 Ωm to 877 Ωm; which were higher than the resistivity value of 284 Ωm recorded for the reference point’s soil. The increase in the soil resistivity of the contaminated soil, poses a momentous threat to the transformer’s grounding structure. Results obtained from this research revealed the necessity for regular monitoring of the electrical distribution installations to enhance their working conditions.

ABSTRACT

In Ohafia land, just like other Cross River Igbo group, age grade formation has been instrumental to socio-political and economic advancement of the people. It is one of the peoples’ cultural expressions that has survived the pangs of modernity. In that, it has been a major instrument of socialization in the Community, thus the platform for the promotion of harmonious relationship and development. In that regard, it is not unusual among the people to note that, over 90% of social amenities in Cross River Igbo communities are provided by the age grades. The importance of age grade system in Igbo land has equally conferred on them, the honor and the responsibilities of making laws, enforcing them, as well as securing the Community from both internal and external aggressions. This is apart from their primary objective of the provision of basic amenities. For long, the contributions of the age grade to societal development have been neglected by successive governments in the areas where they are practiced, and this has drawn the attention of this research work. Local government and even the state governments as the second and third tiers of political administration can work more efficiently through collaborative efforts with the age grade institution in promoting social welfare, thereby bring more dividends of democracy to the grassroots. How this could be achieved is the focus of this research.

Abstract

There is a great competition and struggle for supremacy of who controls the international affairs in the emerging New World Order going on among the advanced countries of the world. This struggle is more intense among United States of America, China and Russia. This global struggle for dominance between China and America has affected the global economy with special reference to Africa in general and Nigeria in particular. In the course of the study we found out that the United States has implemented trade policies aimed at reducing its trade deficit with China and curbing China’s economic rise. China, in turn, has sought to increase its economic and political influence globally, particularly through its Belt and Road Initiative. Also, that the struggle has implications for both developed and developing countries. Developed countries have to deal with the rise of China and other emerging powers which threatens their established positions. Developing countries, in Africa, and Nigeria in particular resorted to scouting for relationships with emerging powers such as China for socio-political and economic advantages, but this comes with risks such as debt dependency and political instability. Data used was gathered from documented evidence, descriptive and qualitative data analysis was employed. The study adopted power theory of Laswell and Kaplan, H.J. Morgenthau, etc as a theoretical guide. The work recommended among other things, promotion of multilateralism, encourage economic cooperation, strengthen governance institutions, investment in education and human capital development as a way Africa can cushion the fall-out of the China-Us global struggle for dominance.

ABSTRACT

The study was conducted specifically to ascertain the value added products from cassava, determine the profitability of the major value added products and identify the constraints faced by the small-holder female farmers in the study area. Data were obtained through interview schedule with a questionnaire and analyzed using the budgetary analysis and percentages. The result revealed that the major products produced by the female farmers were garri, fufu, tapioca and chips. The processing enterprise prove profitable with gross margins of N13,250, N19,975, N14,265 and N21,065 respectively, an indication of different profitability levels. Net production income (NPI) was as N13,250, N19,978, N14,265 and N21,065 respectively for garri, fufu, tapioca and chips production respectively. The net return on investment were N1,80, N3.40, N2.25 and N3.50 respectively for the various value added products indicating a profitable venture to tackle hidden hunger among the small-holder female farmers in the study area. The result equally showed that the major constraints to cassava production and processing enterprise included, low yield, lack of improved technology, high cost of inputs, tediousness associated with processing, hazards of smoke and injury during processing. It was recommended that the small-holder female farmers should be empowered by the government and non-governmental organization to have access to improved cassava varieties and technologies to enhance their productivity in production and processing of this important crop.
