Abstract

Due to the incidence of insecurity in Nigeria, most cassava producers should participate more in the formal market which is adjudged to be safer, profitable and reliable in marketing of farm produce than informal marketing. The paper therefore examines the constraints faced by smallholder cassava producers in formal market participation in Imo State. The data were collected by the use of multi-stage random sampling procedure. The data were collected from 120 smallholder cassava farmers who participated actively in formal market (60 males and 60 females) in two agricultural zones of Imo State. Data were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics (Means and percentages) and regression models. The results show that most of the male and female cassava producers were relatively young but not in their active age. Majority of the respondents were married couples with an average family size of 6 persons and above. The male farmers had many years of experience and large farm size than their female counterparts. The female farmers were more educated than their male counterparts. The regression showed the significant variables that influenced the cassava producers’ participation in the formal market as age, household size, years of experience, cooperative membership and gender. Twelve problems were identified as major constraints to the market participation of the male respondents, while 14 constraints were the major problems affecting the female producers. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that government and private organizations should encourage young people and women who are smallholder cassava producers through the provision of access to input and land facilities, good road, improved production technologies to reduce drudgery and enable them to participate more in the formal market to improve income and food security in the study area.

Abstract

The study x-rayed the implication of unstable electricity power supply on the socio-economic activities in Nigeria. In an attempt to obtain the results justifying the objectives of the study necessitate the gathering of necessary data from the business operators and households segments of the society. This was done through the adoption of a well structured questionnaire. The data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis using inferential statistics owing to the nature of the data. It was established from the findings that the lack of stable electricity supply in the country with reference to the focus state, Kogi State has created a scenario whereby overhead cost of businesses has been unnecessarily heightened due to extra cost of privately generated alternative energy supply leading to unabated inflation. It has also been established that the households are enmeshed in energy poverty as they often resort to unclean and unsafe alternative domestic fuel such as firewood and wood charcoal which have both health and environmental concern. The study therefore advocates amongst others that the government should provide rural communities with solar or wind energy to boost overall energy supply in the country and that power distribution companies should immediately stop direct electric billing to customers and ensure that provision of electricity meters becomes their prime responsibility in order to improve  the efficiency in the power sector.

Abstract

This study determined how credit to private sector, market capitalization, broad money supply and savings explained and affected the variation in industrial sector contribution to foreign direct investment. An Ex-Post Facto research design was adopted to examine how financial development has explained and affected the variation in the performance of the industrial sector in Nigeria. The time frame covers a period of thirty five (35) years that is, from 1986 to 2020. Data were obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) annual reports and statistical bulletin of 2020. The Auto-Regressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) estimation technique was applied in estimating the models via E-Views 10.0. The study revealed that credit to private sector, market capitalization, broad money supply and savings significantly explained and affected the variation in industrial sector contribution to foreign direct investment. To this end, this study concludes that financial development is pivotal to the growth of the industrial sector in Nigeria. It was recommended that in view of the financial intermediation roles of deposit money banks, the research supports the on-going efforts of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in promoting a sound and real sector-friendly financial system.

Abstract

Current global events have necessitated innovations, effectiveness and efficiency in the educational sector. This desire has culminated in the urge to improve the outcome of senior secondary schools. This has further developed the need to carry out researches by educational management as a department and educational administrators as professionals. The paper therefore examined another dimension of leadership traits in the context of achievement of student factors. The study reviewed different literature as they relate to the leadership peculiarities of school managers in order to clearly define the independent variable. It reviewed another dimension of leadership traits in the context of achievement of student factors. The study considered leadership characteristics of not only the principal who is the school head as is the norm. Oftentimes, in order to study indicators of student factors which can shape the lives of the students and make them individuals who are worthy in character and learning, leadership attributes of the principal who is the accounting officer of the school are commonly analysed. In view of the fact that there are other circumstances which can influence student factors either positively or negatively, the study included leadership characteristics of vice-principals, Heads of Departments, and even school prefects as they affect student factors. The student factors which are discussed in this study are: punctuality, regularity and discipline. The study examined conceptually, the impact of school managers’ leadership traits on senior secondary school students. It was observed that an improvement could occur among this population when the traits are put in place.

Abstract

This paper looked at major gases present in the earth’s atmosphere. Relevant literatures and internets were consulted to carry out the study. The atmospheric gases were discussed in relation to their sources, importance, effect on humans, animal, plants and environment and their sustainable management. Despite the importance and usefulness of these gases to humanity and eco-system, they still pose serious problems to the environment as a result of human activities that lead to the increase in quantity of these gases in the earth atmosphere. Sustainable management strategies for these gases suggested include avoidance of the consumption of gases dangerous to ozone, minimizing the use of cars through the use of urban mass transit, growing of more trees and plants, use of smokeless sources of energy like solar energy, and biogas, reduction of waste through recycling and composting, capturing of gas flaring among others.

ABSTRACT

Ocimum gratissimum plant materials and extracts were examined for utilization in the control of the gastro-intestinal parasites especially, notable nematodes and Eimeria species of the domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus: Galliformes) for a sustainable profitable poultry production. O. gratisssimum was chosen based on the already available information on its medicinal and other useful uses in human and veterinary medicine, and most especially its traditional applications. The adverse effects of the presence and activities of some parasitic organisms that inhabit the gastro-intestinal tracts of the domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus: Galliformes) were considered. Two hundred and forty birds (domestic fowls) infected with gastrointestinal parasites were tested with O. gratissimum to ascertain the safety on the birds through acute toxicity test. It was found to be safe for the birds even at relatively very high doses/concentrations of 50mls (of 1000g of the plant-materials in 1000l) per bird. Eighty eight chickens (36.6%) were solely infected with helminth parasites. Number with protozoan parasites (coccidial oocysts) were ninety nine (41.25%), 27.25% had both infections at the same time. The presence of the G.I.T-parasites was established by examination of their faecal matter by direct faecal smear and egg concentration methods. These birds were subjected to in vitro and in vivo tests using various concentrations of O. gratissimum extracts in water and feed. There were adverse effects of Ocimum gratissimum on the various G.I.T-parasites so identified especially, when given in feed.

Abstract

This study examined the nexus between firm characteristics and cash holdings of quoted conglomerates in Nigeria. Six (6) conglomerates constituted the sample size of this study between 2002 and 2021. Ex-Post facto research design was adopted while secondary data were collected from the annual reports and accounts of the sampled conglomerates and analysed using E-Views 9.0 statistical software. The study employed descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using Pearson correlation and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression analysis. Cash holding was measured with cash ratio while firm characteristic was measured using firm size, research and development and leverage. Three hypotheses were formulated and statistically tested at 5 per cent level of significance using Panel Least Square Regression (PLS) analysis, granger causality test and hausman test. Findings from the empirical analysis showed that there is a significant negative relationship between firm size cash ratio and; a significant negative relationship between research and development and cash ratio; a significant negative relationship between leverage and cash ratio of conglomerates listed on Nigeria Stock Exchange at 5% level of significance respectively. It was recommended amongst others that conglomerates should prefer to fund themselves with resources generated internally before resorting to the market in order to safeguard the firms against potential concerns of having to suffer potential losses from forced sale of assets to obtain cash.

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the relationship between virtual organization and corporate productivity of selected oil and gas companies in Rivers State, Nigeria. Efficiency, effectiveness and growth were adopted as dimensions of corporate productivity while virtual organization was seen as a uni-dimensional construct. The design adopted is the cross-sectional survey and data collection was carried out using the structured questionnaire from a total of 325 workers within the firms. The instrument’s validity and reliability were evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha, composite reliability, AVEs, and AVE square roots. The study’s hypotheses were tested using partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The result of the test of hypotheses revealed that adoption of virtual organization positively influences the measures of corporate productivity (efficiency, effectiveness and growth). It was therefore concluded that higher levels of virtuality will lead to higher levels of corporate productivity. The study recommends that managers in the target oil and gas organizations adopt virtual organizational design to ensure a high level of corporate productivity. Managers need to create remote work environments which will enable corporate executives to gain competitive edge and the organization to continually reinvent itself, resulting in a higher corporate productivity.
