  ABSTRACT

Honey is an ancient remedy for the treatment of infected wounds, which has recently been ‘rediscovered’ by the medical profession. There have been reports that honey contains many microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. This study was carried out to investigate the bacterial quality of raw and commercially processed honey sold at Khulna city by local honey collectors and different super markets in Dnajpur city respectively. And also, to evaluate In vitro antibacterial activity of raw and commercially available honey against three-gram negative Bacteria (E. coli. Pseudomonas spp. and Shigella spp.) at different concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%. The results of the isolation and identifications show that raw honey contained more bacterial load than the commercially processed honey. Bacillus spp. and Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from raw honey whereas only Staphylococcus spp. is found in commercially processed honey. However, both types of honey showed antibacterial activity against test organisms with the zone of inhibition ranging from 6.0 to 40.0mm. The potency of honey at 100% concentration was found to be higher than all other concentrations tested. However, no effect was observed at concentration of 25% v/v honey in the case of both samples.

Key words: Raw honey, commercially processed honey, antibacterial activity.

Abstract

The study examined farmers’ perception of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies for soil conservation in Enugu West senatorial zone. A structured interview schedule was used to collect data from a cross section of 87 farmers. Male farmers dominated the study with an average age of 49 years. The mean monthly income of farmers was N38,699.78. Mixed cropping (=3.94); tree planting (=3.08) and farrowing (=3.03) were very effective existing soil conservation practices in the communities. Farmers’ perceived changing the time of planting some crops (=3.12) and use of irrigation practices (=2.59) as effective climate change adaptation strategies for soil conservation while climate change mitigation strategies perceived by farmers as effective for soil conservation were: reduction of bush burning (=3.07) and planting of trees (=2.56). Inadequate extension personnel (=3.14) and lack of adequate training (=2.63) were major constraints to farmers’ climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies for soil conservation. The factors that were found to influence climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies of the farmers were sex, marital status, level of education, household size and age. The study recommended among other things constant training of farmers on various strategies of adapting and mitigating to climate change variability.

Abstract

The study analysed the vegetation quality index of Cross River National Park, Nigeria between year 2000 and 2020. The Cross River National Park has two sections which are the Oban and the Okwango sections. The near real time data of MODIS Terra and Aqua Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of 16 Day global resolution was employed for vegetation index data acquisitions for the study. The NDVI imageries between 2000 and 2020 were considered for the two sections (Oban and Okwango) for the study. Descriptive statistics in form of Tables, mean, standard deviation and maps aided the study in data presentation and interpretation of results. Findings revealed that vegetation health recorded mean values of 0.5678 in year 2000; 0.5603 in year 2014; and 0.4703 in year 2020. Thus, the vegetation health/quality of the Cross River National park had reduced between year 2000 and year 2020. This implies that there is reduction in the size of thick forest vegetation in the Cross River National park which has affected the vegetation quality overtime. The study suggested that control measures to safeguard the national park from further degradation should be initiated in order to protect and conserve the park in the face of expanding human activities.

Abstract

Nation building can be seen as a process of structuring a national identity using the state power which aims at the unification and integration of the people within the state so that it remains politically stable and viable in the long run. It is difficult to build nation in Nigeria because both the political and economic power has given opportunity to the rich due to biases policy – making in favour of the rich. Majority of the people still feel alienated. The tax system is largely regressive and the burden of taxation mostly falls on poorer small scale industries and individuals. It is against this backdrop that this paper examined the socio-economic inequality of nation building in Nigeria. This paper relies on secondary data collected from books, journal articles and was content analyzed in relation to the scope of the paper. The paper concludes that the rising level of socio-economic inequality in Nigeria poses a growing threat to Nigeria nation building and development. Nation building in Nigeria will continue to be hampered when a greater number of the populace continue living under frustration, hunger/ malnutrition and deprivation. It is recommended among others that government should bridge the wide gap between the rich and the poor by rising to empower especially the people at the grassroots, introducing palliative measures to cushion the effects of the economic recession and condemn undue display of wealth.

Abstract: –The study was set to determine the Effects of Sequential Teaching Method on Achievement and Interest of Students in Automobile Technology in Colleges of Education (Technical) in North East Nigeria. The study answered two research questions and tested two null hypotheses. The quasi pre-test, post-test non-equivalent group design and a checklist were used for the study. The population for the study comprised of a total of 246 NCE II (Technical) students drawn from Federal Colleges of Education (Technical) Potiskum and Gombe both in North East Nigeria. The instruments used for data collection were Auto-Electrical System Achievement Test (AESAT) and Auto-Electrical System Students Interest Inventory (AESSII) developed by the researcher. The instruments were face and content validated by experts in Automobile Technology Education. The validated instruments were trial tested on 105 students and analyzed using Cronbach Alpha and Kuder Ricardson Formula 21 (KR-21). The reliability for the instruments stood at 0.78 for AESAT and 0.63 for AESSII. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research question. While Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypothesis one and ANOVA was used to test null hypothesis two at 0.05 level of significance with the help of SPSS statistics. A post-hoc test was conducted to justify the reasons for rejection of the null hypotheses. It was found that students taught Automobile Technology using sequential teaching method had higher mean achievement scores than those taught using lecture and demonstration methods of teaching. The students taught Automobile Technology developed high interest when taught using sequential method of teaching. There was a significant difference in the mean achievement score of students taught Automobile Technology using lecture, demonstration and sequential method of teaching. Significant difference exists in the mean interest level of students taught Automobile Technology than those taught using lecture, demonstration and sequential teaching methods of teaching. Based on the findings of this research, it was recommended among others that teachers in Colleges of education should adopt the use of sequential teaching methods to improve the academic achievement and interest level of students. Government should make it as a matter of policy that teachers should make use of sequential teaching methods to enable students to develop high interest in learning.

Abstract

This work describes a hand gesture recognition system utilizing Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) for computer vision applications. The system processes video input of hand gestures through skin color-based segmentation, morphological operations, hand segmentation, and hand tracking and trajectory smoothing. The HMM with Gaussian emissions is implemented using the HMM learn package, and the Viterbi algorithm is used to decode an observation sequence and determine the most likely state sequence and its probability. The work also presents the methodology for data collection, preparation, and augmentation, as well as the quantization of discrete observations and Baum-Welch re-estimation algorithm. The performance of the system is evaluated using a test set of observation sequences, and the accuracy of the maximum likelihood classifier for recognizing letters is assessed using a validation set. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the system for accurately recognizing hand gestures and corresponding letters.
