ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship between sustainable packaging and waste management in manufacturing firms in Rivers State. The study employed the correlational survey research design. The population of the study consisted of top level managers of the 27 manufacturing firms registered with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) in Rivers State. A sample size of 161 respondents was selected from the population of 270 top level managers using simple random sampling technique. The sample size was determined using the Krejice and Morgan sample size determination formula. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data from the respondents. The data collected from the respondents were analyzed statistically while the hypotheses were tested using Spearman Rank Order Correlation Coefficient (rho). The SPSS version 22.0 was used to correlate the data collected on the study variables. The findings revealed that packaging optimization has a positive and significant relationship with waste management (waste reduction, waste collection, waste recycling and waste disposal) in manufacturing firms. The study also found a positive and significant relationship between reusable packaging and waste management (waste reduction, waste collection, waste recycling and waste disposal) in manufacturing firms. The study equally reported a positive and significant relationship between recyclable packaging and waste management (waste reduction, waste collection, waste recycling and waste disposal) in manufacturing firms. A significant positive but weak relationship was reported between biodegradable packaging and waste management (waste reduction, waste collection, waste recycling and waste disposal) in manufacturing firms. Based on these findings, it was concluded that sustainable packaging significantly enhances effective waste management in manufacturing firms in Rivers State. Based on the findings and conclusion, it was recommended that manufacturing firms in Rivers State should adopt sustainable packaging as it would enhance effective waste management in manufacturing firms in the State.
