Abstract

Fossil fuel depletion, price volatility, global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and detrimental health consequences are all characteristics of Nigeria’s traditional energy sources, particularly the burning of biomass and fossil fuels. This proposed study intends to critically analyze the health impacts of biomass burning in homes with an emphasis on the health of women and girls who are primarily responsible for gathering firewood and cooking in the home. A study evaluated many of the potentials of solar energy photovoltaic in order to reduce the personal risks that women face from predatory males and other animals when they leave their homes to collect wood, as well as the physical effects of carrying loads of several kilograms over several kilometers, which can result in compression injuries to the neck, back, and hips. All of these issues would be greatly diminished by the widespread adoption of renewable energy. It included a summary of the several renewable energy sources, the implications of climate change, and the health effects of energy sources.

Abstract

This study examined the herdsmen and farmers conflict in Nigeria and the challenge it poses to food security in the country. The conflict between herdsmen and farmers which hinged on the grazing of livestock has led to the destruction of farmlands and also killing of innocent farmers across the country. The incessant attacks on farmers by herdsmen have forced many farmers to abandon their farms for fear of being maimed or killed. The abandonment of farmlands by farmers will no doubt impact food security in the country. The study was carried out in Benue and Plateau states in the North Central Geo-political zone, Ekiti and Oyo states in the South West Geo-political zone and Enugu and Ebonyi states in South East Geo-political zone. The study adopted survey method and a total of three thousand six hundred (3,600) questionnaires were administered to the respondents in selected states from the three geo-political zones. Two thousand four hundred and eighty-two (2,482) questionnaires were successfully retrieved. The data collected was analyzed using the arithmetic mean. The findings revealed that the encroachment of herdsmen’s cattle into farmlands leading to the destruction of farm crops is one of the major causes of the conflict between herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria. The findings also revealed that the herdsmen and farmer conflict pose a serious challenge to food security in the country due to the incessant attacks on farmers which have prompted most farmers to abandon their farms. The study recommends among others the need for strong political will from the Federal and State Governments in resolving the conflict between herdsmen and farmers in the country.

Abstract

Huge quantities of harvested grains are stored in traditional ways thereby leading to food losses. Hence the need for technical improvement in grain storage structures. This article exposed quantifiable evidence on the state of adoption of hermetic storage bag technologies. Multi-staged sampling procedure was used and a structured questionnaire on the kobo collect software was used to elicit information from 170 farmers. The study used descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (Logit regression model) to analyse the data using STATA version 13.0 software. The study revealed that majority (71%) of the farmers were male, (80.59%) of the farmers were married and the mean age and farming experience were 47 years and 18 years respectively. About (39%) of the farmers attended secondary school education. The mean monthly income was found to be N42, 902.94 while an average of 17 extension contacts per annum were recorded. Among the indigenous systems of storage used are jute sack which had the greatest percentages of usage with (59.41%). On sources of Information available to the farmers, Agricultural Extension Officers (x̅ = 3.40) ranked highest. On the stages of adoption, greater majority (51.8%) of the farmers had adopted the technology. From the regression result, monthly income (0.00003)*, extension contact per annum (0.042)* and educational qualification (0.36)* were only significant at 10% level of probability. Whereas, only sex (-0.33)** was significant at 5% level of probability. The adoption numbers are not all that fantastic considering the percentage of farmers still unaware such a technology exists. The efforts of the agricultural extension officers in collaboration with other agencies and nongovernmental organizations should play a pivotal role in facilitating the rate of adoption.

ABSTRACT

Concrete has been found to have excellent compressive strength but poor in tensile strength. To take care of the tensile stresses, steel is commonly used as reinforcing material in building. Production of steel is however very costly and its use in concrete as reinforcing material increases the cost of construction by many folds. Also production of steel emits a large amount of greenhouse gases causing considerable deterioration of the environment. This review therefore addresses ‘bamboo-reinforced concrete’ and assesses its structural and environmental performance as a viable alternative to steel reinforced concrete. It was opined that Bamboo’s light weight and relative flexibility make it a particularly attractive alternative for residential construction.  It was concluded that, although bamboo is a material with extraordinary mechanical properties, its use in bamboo-reinforced concrete during construction is still seen as the situation remains the same even when an ill-considered concept, even with its significant durability, strength and stiffness issues, has not met the environmentally friendly credentials often attributed to it.

Department of Banking and Finance, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State

Abstract

This paper examined macroeconomic indicators and capital market performance from 1997 to 2020. Time series data was collected from Statistical bulletin of Central Bank of Nigeria and was used to analyze the effect of explanatory variables (gross domestic product, interest rate, index of industrial production and employment rate) on the dependent variable (market capitalization). Error Correction Mechanism was used to analyze the date and the result of the analysis indicates that macroeconomic variables have positive but insignificant effect on capital market performance within the period of the study. The study therefore recommends that Nigeria’s interest rate is too high and needs to be reviewed downward. The study also advocates for stable macroeconomic policies which will help private sector growth. Government should improve on the security condition of the country and provide the necessary infrastructure like electricity that will help improve the economic condition of the country and capital market in particular.

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between capital flows and industrial output in Nigeria from 1982 to 2020. Data on Industrial output (INDQ), Foreign Direct Investment Inflows (FDI), Foreign Portfolio investment (FPI), External debt stock (ExD) and Migrant remittance inflows (RMT) were analyzed using the vector autoregression (VAR) model. The impulse response function shows that FDI and FPI exhibit positive effects on INDQ for about two periods after which the effects could not be sustained. The evolution of industrial output due to shocks in external debt was passive. Against appriori expectations, remittances showed a negative effect on INDQ. The VAR Granger Causality/Block Exogeneity Wald Tests results indicate that FDI and FPI Granger cause industrial output. External debt and remittances do not Granger cause industrial output. The variance decomposition result shows that FPI contributed more to changes in INDQ followed by RMT, FDI and ExD in that order. The study concludes that capital flows’ components vary in their relationship with industrial output in Nigeria. But, Capital flows as represented by FDI, FPI, ExD and RMT jointly and significantly Granger cause INDQ. Therefore, Government may have to rely mostly on FPI and FDI to promote Industrial output growth and reduce to the barest minimum the use of external debt. Finally, Government should be concerned about the negative effect of remittances on industrial output and think of ways to not only reverse the trend but use it to spur industrial output.
