Abstract:

The study explored the relationship between entrepreneurial education and entrepreneurial intention of undergraduate students in universities. An analytic descriptive survey design was employed while a sample of 240 undergrads was selected through a stratified sampling procedure from the study population of 534 students. A structured questionnaire designed on a 5-point Likert scale of strongly agree to strongly disagree was the means of data collection. The instrument was structured and pretested to ascertain the content validity and reliability of the instrument through Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.76 and 0.85 for entrepreneurial education and orientation. The data were collected through the distribution of the pieces of questionnaire to undergraduate students and were collected. The data were analyzed using hierarchical regression analysis and independent samples t-test. The results indicated that practical and theoretical entrepreneurship education had a positive effect on entrepreneurial intention of undergraduates of universities. We concluded that entrepreneurship education is a key aspect in driving the intention of students towards entrepreneurship. Further, we recommended that both theoretical and practical entrepreneurship classes should be employed in imparting entrepreneurship curriculum contents and knowledge to students.

ABSTRACT: Studies have indicated that both the indigenous and immigrants-owned entrepreneurs in South Africa adopt different business models to run their business and by so doing one group may have perceived to perform more than the other. The fact that entrepreneurs aspire to grow their businesses, have given room for them to rely on using various components to grow their businesses. In the quest to succeed the immigrants’ entrepreneurs seek various components to run their business which led them to outperform the indigenous entrepreneurs. The study employed a qualitative approach that includes purposive sampling, interview and thematic content analysis to justify the counterclaim on the various business models employed by the entrepreneurs and a number of factors emerged from the statistical approach conducted. The findings speak to the needs and expectations of the different business models employed by this different group. It was observed that certain business models are employed by the immigrants’ entrepreneurs that enabled them outperform the indigenous entrepreneurs in South Africa such as lay-bye, giving goods on credit, up-to-date with customers’ needs, need analysis, long hours of operation, discount prices, effective networking and many more. The study observed that the growth and advancement of entrepreneurs is dependent upon the business models that are employed by the entrepreneur to successful run a business. The study recommended among others that the government should as a matter of urgency create entrepreneur centers that can assist and support young and intending entrepreneurs at various communities; provide training intervention and sensitize the public.

The effectiveness of Igbo Apprenticeship Model in Nigeria: How Can these Master-Servant Intersection Improve Youth Employment in Nigeria’s Informal Sector.

The effectiveness of Igbo Apprenticeship Model in Nigeria: How Can these Master-Servant Intersection Improve Youth Employment in Nigeria’s Informal Sector.

Jude Chidiebere Anago

Abstract: In the face of extreme poverty, amplified by massive youth unemployment in Nigeria, this study theorises that collaboration between the government and private sectors to mobilise resources to restructure the Igbo apprenticeship model is a panacea to rising youth unemployment in Nigeria. Against this backdrop, this study examines the factors militating Nigeria’s Igbo apprenticeship model decline through the qualitative methodology. Results show that the apprenticeship duration, lack of education integration and provision of seed capital upon graduation from the apprenticeship training are the top three challenges triggering failure. Recommendation stressed that the Igbo apprenticeship model solely practised by the informal private sectors of Igbo origin could drop the unemployment rate in Nigeria if the government reformed the process by introducing grants or seed capital and education for the apprentice. There is optimism that both would achieve more together than the current practice where the practitioners are left practising the old-fashioned model.

Abstract

The paper adopted survey research design in order to determine entrepreneurial skills for youth’s development in South-South, Nigeria. The population of the study was 2,400 youths from six states in South-South region of Nigeria. A structured questionnaire titled “Entrepreneurial Skills for Youths Development Questionnaire (ESYDQ) was developed and used for the study. The questionnaire was structured on a 4-point likert rating scale of strongly agree (4) points, agree (3) points, disagree (2) points and strongly disagree (1) point. The instrument was validated by 3 research experts. The reliability of the instrument was determined through a pilot study involving 30 eligible youths from Imo State which was outside the study area while Cronbach Alpha SPSS  was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument which yielded overall reliability co-efficient of 0.88. 2,060 copies of questionnaires were retrieved out of the 2,400 copies distributed which yielded 86% retrieval rate. The data collected from respondents were analyzed using mean and standard deviations while z-test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. It was concluded that youths in south-south desired to be trained in entrepreneurial trade skills. It was recommended among others that, government should make deliberate policies that will encourage youths in the South-South region of Nigeria to embrace trade skills acquisition for self-development.

Abstract

Women form the backbone of Nigerian economies, accounting for a majority of small and medium-sized businesses, dominating the agriculture sector as primary producers and food processors, as well as in many service sectors. Their full economic empowerment is therefore crucial to increase productivity levels, enhance economic efficiency, and improve overall development outcomes to achieve inclusive growth. However, there was gender imbalance for a long time in the control of wealth in Nigeria particularly in the north because entrepreneurship used to be male-dominated; only men used to own businesses and controlled factors of production. This infamous trend has however dwindled especially in the last two decades but not at a satisfactory level.  This project will examine the multiple obstacles that continue to impede female entrepreneurship in Nigeria. Data that would be used are mainly from secondary sources-Federal Office of Statistics (FOS) (2018), NBS (2017) and Annabel &Mairo (2017) on the variables affecting the growth of female entrepreneurship in Nigeria, particularly in the northern region.  Sources of fuel wood, child marriage and educational exposure of Nigerian women are the three (3) main variables to be used in presenting the available data and how these combines to retard the growth of women entrepreneurship in Nigeria. Also, in-depth interviews would be carried out to complement the secondary data. Sixteen (16) female entrepreneurs shall be purposively selected from sixteen (16) systematically chosen households at Okengwe in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State and interviewed with a semi-structured questionnaire that centre on various aspects of female entrepreneurship in the State and in Nigeria as a whole. Deductions made from the data and interviews would be presented descriptively from here we make submissions on female entrepreneurship in Nigeria. The research will recommend among others delaying age at marriage and completing at least secondary education by all girls in order to increase women entrepreneurship and reduce poverty among Nigerian women.
