Abstract

This work inquired into the relationship between entrepreneurial psychological traits and business success of SMES in Port Harcourt. A survey design was adopted and the study covered a population of 1200 SMEs in Port Harcourt. A sample of 291 respondents was drawn from the population and the systematic sampling technique was utilized. Data was collected using copies of questionnaire. The Spearman Rank Order correlation was used in analyzing the data so as to ascertain the relationship between the dimensions of entrepreneurial psychological trait (conscientiousness and extraversion) with the measures of business success (profitability and survival). The outcome of the analysis revealed that a significant and positive relationship exists between the dimensions of entrepreneurial psychological traits and the measures of business success. It was concluded that the psychological traits of the entrepreneurs in terms of conscientiousness and extraversion are important factors in boosting the business success of SMEs in Port Harcourt. Among others, it was recommended that the owners of the SME should ensure diligence in carrying out their task in the workplace as such will help enhance their profitability.

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between competitive intelligence and firm’s performance of food and beverage firm in Rivers state, Nigeria. The cross-sectional survey design was utilized and a total population of 198 employees from twenty (20) food and beverage firms in Rivers State was covered. A sample size of 132 managers and supervisors was drawn as the sample size of the study. Data were collected using copies of well-structured questionnaire and the simple random sampling technique was utilized in the study. The data was analyzed using the Spearman’s Rank Order Correlation. The result of the analysis revealed that the dimensions of competitive intelligence (market intelligence and technological intelligence) have a significant positive relationship with productivity and goal attainment. It was concluded that enhanced competitive intelligence in terms of market intelligence and technological intelligence, help improve the performance of food and beverage firms. Management of food and beverage firms needs to understand the importance of market intelligence and allocate enough resources or budget for operation of the intelligence unit for better productivity and performance.

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between networking capability and organizational success of food and beverage firms in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was used. 164 manager and supervisors of the food and beverage firms in Port Harcourt make up the population. A census study was conducted. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. In order to determine the relationship between networking capability and organizational success, the Spearman rank correlation was used in the analysis. According to the study, networking capability is related to organizational success. The study recommended that networking capability should be enhanced for organizational success.

Abstract

The study explored the nexus between knowledge sharing and entrepreneurial orientation of small and medium enterprises in Bayelsa State. The study applied a quantitative design and selected a sample of 312 managers of SMEs through simple random and stratified sampling methods. A structured questionnaire designed in a 5-point Likert form was utilized in collecting data through the distribution of the questionnaire to respondents. The content approach was adopted to ascertain the validity of the measuring instrument while Cronbach alpha was applied to determine the reliability of the measurement instrument. The data collected were analyzed with multivariate regression and found that knowledge sharing had a  positive but no significant effect on risk-taking;  knowledge sharing had a positive significant effect on innovativeness of small and medium enterprises; knowledge sharing had a  positive but no significant effect on proactiveness of small and medium enterprises; knowledge sharing had a positive significant effect on the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises; and knowledge sharing had a positive but no significant effect on autonomy of small and medium enterprises in Bayelsa state. The study concluded that knowledge sharing contributed to the entrepreneurial orientation of small and medium enterprises in Bayelsa State. In tandem with the findings, we recommended that managers and owner managers of SMEs should build knowledge management systems that facilitate exchange of intellectual capital to enhance entrepreneurial orientations to attain sustainable competitive edge.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship between expansion strategy and resilience of fish farm businesses in Rivers state. One hundred and eighteen (118) copies of questionnaires were retrieved and 112 usable and were analyzed from the field survey. Spearman’s ranking order correlation coefficient statistical tool was employed to ascertain the relationship that exist between the variables while the P-value obtained was used to test the hypotheses that were developed for the study. Regression analysis was adopted for the multivariate level analysis to ascertain the moderating effect of entrepreneurial motives and the relationship between expansion strategies and resilience of fish farms. Findings revealed a significant relationship between the dimensions of expansion strategy namely, vertical expansion, upward and downward and horizontal, related, and unrelated and the measures of resilience of fish farm, agility, robustness, adaptability. And employee motive significantly moderates the relationship between the predictor and criterion variables. It was concluded that expansion strategy significantly relates to resilience of fish businesses in Rivers state. The study recommended that the examined fish business entrepreneurs’ motive should strive to adopt expansion strategy to manage the fish business as this will foster healthy competition against meat which is a close substitute to fish and from pandemic outbreak as this will make fish entrepreneurs more satisfactory.

Abstract

Tertiary Institutions in the public sector are suffering from a series of industrial actions in the last few decades. Perhaps this is a result of some untold stories relating to lack of motivation due to the government and management of institutions not responding to some very important Human Resource practices such as motivating employees through non-financial rewards. The study explored the impact of non-financial rewards on employee motivation in tertiary institutions. The independent variable, non-financial rewards and its dimensions (promotion, recognition, job security, decision-making, and career opportunities) the dependent variable, employee motivation and its measures (intrinsic and extrinsic motivation) were looked at. The purpose of the study was to find out the impact of non-financial rewards on employee motivation in tertiary institutions in Bayelsa state. Findings in the study show that non-financial rewards have a significant impact on employee motivation. However, government and management do not have the willpower to motivate their employees. This has resulted in continuous agitations in the educational sub-sector. The study recommended that the government and management of tertiary institutions should take non-financial rewards seriously to motivate employees because it is more honoured and appreciated in addition to pay rewards.
