ABSTRACT

Despite the recent decent performance in income growth, Africa remains one continent that has continued to be severely riddled by deep-seethed endemic poverty and excruciating income inequality thereby causing sharp deterioration in all indices of human welfare. This paper is an attempt to assess the income growth, poverty, inequality, and human welfare experience in Africa using recent empirical socio-economic metrics in selected Sub-Saharan African countries. The period under review is 2012 – 2021 and the study utilizes a quantitative research technique to assess how income growth, poverty, and inequality interact to influence human welfare in the selected countries. Evidence shows that income growth in African countries benefits the already well-off and that poverty, in fact, is severe and widespread and has a negative impact not only on the prospects of growth but also on even income distribution which is crucial for inclusive growth and sustained human welfare. It was further confirmed that poverty and poverty and inequality have risen and human welfare condition in Sub-Sahara Africa has plummeted over the decade across the region and when compared to the other regions and the world average. We found that within Africa and beyond most poverty is concentrated in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. We, therefore, recommend the following policy applications to stem the tides of poverty and income inequality in Sub-Saharan African countries, amongst others: shifting the focus of poverty-alleviation policies from income/economic growth as the primary driver of poverty reduction to policies targeted at decelerating inequality, placing greater focus on human development strategies to improve the quality of life and providing the appropriate institutional and macroeconomic framework to increase access to markets for the poor.

Abstract

The study investigated principals’ application of budgeting practices for effective decision-making in public secondary schools in Ebonyi State. Four research questions guided the study and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of 233 principals (98 males and 135 females) in the 233 public secondary schools in Ebonyi State. All the 233 principals (98 males and 135 females) constituted the sample for the study as the population is relatively small and manageable size. The instrument for data collection was a researcher-developed questionnaire titled ‘‘Principals’ Application of Budget Practices for Effective Decision-Making Questionnaire (PABPEDMQ)’’. The instrument was face validated by three experts comprising two lecturers from the Department of Educational Management and Policy, and the other a lecturer in Measurement and Evaluation all from the Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Cronbach alpha was used to determine the reliability of the instrument which yielded an overall reliability coefficient of 0.82. The researcher together with two research assistants collected data for the study using the direct approach method and 97% return was recorded. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test was used in testing the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed among others that revenue and expenditure plan practices are applied by male and female principals for effective decision-making in secondary schools in Ebonyi State. It was also found out that there is no significant difference in the mean ratings of male and female principals on the revenue and expenditure plan practices they apply for effective decision-making in secondary schools in Ebonyi State. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that Ministry of Education should make frantic effort towards monitoring the financial expenditure of principals.

Abstract

The study investigated organizational culture and justice as predictors of lecturers’ job commitment in colleges of education in South East, Nigeria. Four research questions guided the study and four null hypotheses which were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Correlation research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised all the 3,072 lecturers in all the five State and four Federal Government-owned Colleges of Education in South East, Nigeria. A sample size of 519 lecturers was drawn for the study using multistage sampling procedure involving simple random and proportionate sampling techniques. A researcher developed questionnaires titled ‘‘Organizational Culture Scale (OCS)’’, ‘‘Organizational Justice Scale (OJS)’’ and ‘‘Lecturers Job Commitment Scale (LJCS)’’ were used for data collection. The instruments were validated by three experts, two from the Department of Educational Management and Policy, and one from the Department of Educational Foundations, Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Cronbach alpha was used for a test of internal consistency of the instrument and it yielded overall reliability co-efficients of 0.81, 0.79 and 0.80 for OCS, OJS and LJCS respectively. The researcher together with five research assistants collected data for the study using the direct approach method and 97% return was recorded. Simple regression was used to answer the research questions and hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed among others that supportive culture, innovative culture and distributive justice are strong predictors of lecturers’ job commitment. It also revealed that all dimensions of organizational culture and justice are significant predictors of lecturers’ job commitment in colleges of education in South East, Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that National Commissions for Colleges of Education should embark on periodic review of organizational cultures of colleges and make recommendations thereon to bring positive modification for creating favourable work environment that improve the job commitment of lecturers.

ABSTRACT

Pteridophytes are a group of primitive vascular plants; the adult phase is the sporophyte phase. It shows differentiation into adventitious roots, stems and leaves. Pteridophytes include Fernshorsetails, and lycophytes (clubmosses, spikemosses, and quillworts). This study aimed to provide a checklist of Pteridophytes found in Rivers State University, Rivers State, Nigeria. Different species of Pteridophyte samples were sited and freshly collected around the metropolis of Rivers State University. They were taken to the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology Laboratory in polythene bags with tags, and were identified and authenticated by Dr. M.G. ABSTRACT: This study was designed to examine the relationship between work-life-balance and organizational performance in the Nigeria Police Force, Ikot Akpan Abia, Akwa Ibom State. Two hypotheses were formulated in line with the research objectives. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and a sample size of three hundred and fifty-three (353) respondents was drawn from a population of three thousand and eight (3008) using Taro Yamane’s formula for sample size determination. The major instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire administered to the respondents and the data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and Ordinal Logistic Regression Analysis. The result of the findings revealed that, there is a significant positive relationship between variables of flexible work arrangement (𝛽2) 1.681, welfare policies (𝛽3) = 1.771, and organizational performance 0.620 in the Nigeria Police Force, Ikot Akpan Abia. Based on the findings of the analysis, all the proxies of Work-life Balance had significant positive relationship with Organizational performance. Consequently, it is recommended that Government should provide flexible work arrangement by introducing remote work options for certain roles within the police force, where officers can perform their duties from a remote location using technology. Through welfare policies, government should ensure that police officers receive competitive salaries and benefits that reflect the demands and risks associated with their roles. Government should implement comprehensive health and wellness initiatives that prioritize the physical and mental well-being of police officers as this will improve organizational performance.

A research survey design was employed for the work, a total of 275 respondents were used as population of the study. Data gathered were analyzed and four hypotheses formulated were tested using statistical tool of Regression Analysis test, the four formulated null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The result from the analysis showed that, talent management is a significant strategy for organizational sustainability (r=0.642, p<0.05); career development has a significant influence on organizations sustainability among Banks in Eket Local Govt, Aks (r=0.772, p<0.05).
